Cannibal films, slashers, killer animals and shockumentaries are all sub genres and Bloody Birthday can be classified into the killer children subgenre along the likes of Who Can Kill A Child, Village Of The Damned, The Children (2008), ils (Them), Mikey, The Orphan and to a lesser extent, The Good Son. Bloody Birthday not being at the top of the heap but still, nonetheless, an entertaining 80's suspense/thriller.

Bloody Birthday follows three lead characters, a pack of kiddies all born on the night of a lunar eclipse, with a penchant for killing due to the sun and moon blocking out Saturn, a planet which is said to cause emotions and feelings in people -- what a premise! The little murderers impale, bludgeon, strangle and shoot their way through whomever they so choose in sadistic fashion and family are usually the first to get it.

The three little murderers carry the film and their methods are usually quite sinister in dispatching victims. They are manipulative, intelligent and well behaved in the eyes of society. Blessed by a couple of great nude scenes and some tense moments including a car chase in a junkyard where one of the kiddies dons a white hood. Most mainstream critics panned the film upon its release, which is probably something to do with the plot and the twisted idea of children as merciless killers. Bloody Birthday is a bit of 80's horror/thriller fun.
