Anyone heard of a Donkey Punch?” inquires Bluey (Tom Burke), a harelipped, Brian Austin Green look alike, to his buds and some recently acquainted females as they soak up some rays.  “You’re taking a loved one from behind, and just when you’re about to blow your load…”, making a whack sound with his hands he continues, “…back of the neck, involuntary muscle spasm.  The clench -- you’ve never felt anything like it.”  Thus presents the premise of a film with such an absurd concept.  It would seem that a film like this could only be concocted by a bunch of horny dudes after a night of intense drug and alcohol abuse.  The plausibility of it even being made is another issue.  As it stands, Donkey Punch is indeed an actual movie, and a damn good film at that.

The debauchery begins with a group of young women vacationing in Spain.  Out partying one night they run into a bunch of guys.  They hit it off and the guys invite them aboard their yacht.  One of the girls, Tammi (Nichola Burley) is initially reluctant to venture on the open water with a bunch of blokes she barely knows, but after some coaxing she obliges and they all continue on a new adventure.  Once on the open water, Bluey (Burke) breaks out the ecstasy and meth and the festivities continue.  Next enter the obligatory “donkey punch” reference as initially addressed, and after everyone’s high, some of the group retires to the lower deck to explore their sexual urges.  Lisa (Sian Breckin) and Kim (Jaime Winstone) begin to make out, setting the tone for what is to come.  Bluey is on the bed with Lisa, while Sean (Robert Boulter) gets it on, on the couch with Kim.  Meanwhile, an excited and virginal Josh (Julian Morris) videotapes the event.

Things take the ultimate downward spiral when Bluey gives Josh a taste.  Josh enters the scene with Lisa and after some heavy screwing he gets a little too excited.  In the throes of fucking, an enthused Josh donkey punches Lisa in the back of the neck.  This marks the end of the festivities and the beginning of chaos.  With that quick impulsive (albeit innocent action), Lisa turns quickly limp -- quickly dead.  What progresses is a hellish evening as everyone reacts to this accidental murder.  Conflicts abound.  They all clash, and attempt to figure out a way out of this mess.

What makes Donkey Punch such a unique and effective film, is that you can conceivably see this happening.  How the individuals react to this tragic situation makes for an engrossing movie.  There’s a scene where the men decide to dump Lisa’s body, and in essence they have no real emotional connection to her.  They find the task easy -- easier than a lifetime in prison for murder, at least.  On the other hand, the girls are friends with Lisa, so their reaction is vastly different.  They oppose to dumping her in the ocean, but they are helpless.  The girls are outnumbered and overpowered by the men so they have to sit by and watch as the guys go forth with their actions.  That is until they’ve had enough and fight back.

Donkey Punch is a unique British film.  With a premise like this it has amazingly managed to reach a wide audience with this Magnet Releasing/Magnolia Pictures DVD release.  This is due to how the material is handled by director Olly Blackburn.  An exploitation film, this is not.  The film’s main praise goes to the character’s reactions to such a fucked up predicament.  For the jaded horror fan it does contain some nudity, but the theme alone should be enough of a guilty pleasure.  Donkey Punch is the feel good date movie of the year.  You’ll be giving your significant other a rusty trombone in agreement.  I’ll be looking forward to a possible sequel, entitled “Pink Sock”!

SUPPLEMENTAL MATERIAL:

- Deleted Scenes
- Making of
- Director Interview
- Cast Interviews
- Director Commentary

Donkey Punch comes to DVD via Magnolia Pictures and Magnet Releasing in a 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen aspect ratio and looks perfect.  The English audio is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0.  The Dolby Digital audio is utilized enough that you won’t find yourself missing a DTS track.  The DVD has a nice amount of extras -- the best part being an interesting and in depth commentary track by director Olly Blackburn and producer Angus Lamont.  There are 29-minutes of “Cast Interviews” from the entire cast for you to watch.  These are split into three sections “Tom Burke & Julian Morris”, Jay Taylor & Robert Boulter”, and Nichola Burley, Jaime Winstone & Sian Breckin.”  There is also a 14-minute interview with director Olly Blackburn where he answers questions from his inspiration in making Donkey Punch to what it was like shooting on a boat.  A 17-minute “Making of Donkey Punch” is another good supplemental feature on this disc, but it’s more of a series of interviews intertwined with footage from the film, rather than an actual “making of”.  Rounding out this DVD release are 6 deleted scenes running 12-minutes in length and trailers for the “6-Shooter Film Series”.  Those included are Let the Right One In, Special, Timecrimes, Eden Log, Big Man Japan, and this movie.
