When a lot of modern creators of horrors and deep red gore mashups take influence from the legends of the genre, be it Argento, Bava, whomever, the makers only kind of make reference to the person's most well-known works. Take for example, Lucio Fulci. He is known only for a small handful of his giant cannon of corpses and deaths. People say, Zombie Flesh Eaters, The New York Ripper, The Beyond, etcetera, with great gusto, forgetting his other lesser knowns.

So I believe that Richard Griffin, and writer Michael Varrati have probably thought, a bit about City of the Living Dead, but Fulci also did a later play on religion with Demonia. Hence, a greater influence could be of the work that has gone towards making Flesh for the Inferno. Naturally, there's a throng on possessed and pissed off Nuns in the annals of Italian cinema, but after watching this I really feel Demonia in my soul.

Richard Griffin and his gang work with low budgets, as do a zillion players in the field of the genre. However it's not the size, it's what you do with it! Does your insertion into horror have the stamina and passion? It may be small but can it fill a gore-hound's pram? Or is it a wasted limp embarrassment?

Flesh for the Inferno is a strong bloody orgasm with a decent script and a cool location choice. The thing is though, as I shall cover later, what it has in its power, it loses some in other factors, which is a shame.

Opening with a quote by Martin Luther: “For where God built a church, there the Devil would also build a chapel!” Thus onto a procession of Nuns walking akin to the zombie monks in Burial Ground, these ladies all spill into the office of Father Renault, who isn't too impressed by the invasion. His bad acting rises in anger as he slates them and throws insults. The central Nun name checks a boy called McCall. “Pray tell, what do you think you know?” he leers. It seems as if he's had his way with a few lads; rape and buggery, Catholic style. As the accusations fly, he eases his hand into his desk drawer. Renault smugly smiles when told he will be judged by the authorities and God.

“You first, bitch!” he raises a gun and shoots one in the head with a splash of CGI blood. The others begin to cry. He pimp slaps the nearest face he sees. “No! Don't you dare run! Look at her... She got off easy! You three, however.....!”

It's off to the basement they go, and washing laundry is the last thing on everyone's mind, he instead bricks them up in pure vintage gothic fashion. “You will die here in slow agony!”

“I would rather us become the brides of Satan than serve our God!” so begins a radical plot planning anti-faith speech by the Head Sister. Within the darkness, a pact is made....... “Should have just had them,” said my Horror Soulmate beside me, “they'd be very tight.”

The title music is so retro it gave me the warm feeling I used to get back in the old school days when my Mum and myself would trot to the video shops in my area and rent a random horror based on the cover artwork and some blurred gruesome stills on the back of the fat puffa boxes. In fact, this DVD release has blurred gruesome stills on the back! Cool!

Jump to present day, well, 2015. A van crammed with kids and team leaders arrive to clean the old Catholic School up. It's been abandoned for a while (all those fateful incidents occurred back in 1988). The two who are in charge are 'Uncle' Teddy Maupin ( he's uncle to one of the kids aptly named Noah) and Meredith, who has that starry eyed bible licking attitude that turns up knocking at your door after your evening meal preaching because you're a sinner in her eyes just for having horns and sodomising kittens. We also meet long-haired sour-faced drawl-voiced, Halsey, who is the caretaker to the rundown edifice. As the gaggle of students begin to talk, you hate them. I mean, hate them! There's nobody to lock to for the duration and wish to survive whatever is coming forth. Especially Chester who is a camp heterosexual wearing a loud shirt. The rest of them are mismatched as a gang of survivors go, about as tight as Jennifer in the original I Spit on Your Grave after the rapes. The stronger characters are Kat, Noah and Gwen.

Down in the basement once the clean-up programme begins in gusto, a chunky lad, Patton (who, as my Horror Soulmate said, throws out goons expressions like an episode of Road Runner) happens to tap on the wall. He hears noises from within. His girlfriend, Becca comes in and peers into a hole in the bricks.

“I can't see out of my eye.” she turns to him, displaying a bloody empty socket, “Why can't I see?” Her blood on the wall is sucked into the hole. The lights flicker and Becca is sliced to pieces on the floor. Patton runs off crying.

Kat discovers an old bible which opens by itself. Scrawled inside is a child's hasty writing page after page. SISTER, PLEASE, I SAY MY PRAYERS BUT NO ONE IS LISTENING.... and the final part says: HE COMES AT MIDNIGHT. There's whispers in the air and the pages blow apart.

Other things are happening around the building. For instance, Meredith chances upon a mysterious Nun called Luisa. “I didn't know there were any clergy left on site.” beams Meredith. Luisa sneers, “Some may say we never left.” When Meredith uses christ's name, Luisa grows big nails, has black eyes and a fella's voice. Soon after, Gwen, Meredith and Patton meet up but Patton has his tongue removed for calling one of the sister's a bitch. We noticed his real tongue still lolling about in his mouth, and as the two girls run, you can spot a cameraman’s reflection.

Meredith gets a signal on her mobile and calls the cops, but uses the term “Demon Nuns.” The guy on the other end is a bit doubtful, but radios to two detectives who we are introduced to via a long painfully drab conversation whilst a hooker sits in the back on the car.

Chester, meanwhile, is seduced by two Nuns wearing, well, not much. From then on it's full on haunted house kill everybody you can in gory inventive fashion. No one's safe, not them, the cops or even the poor hooker who is crucified for a laugh. The Nuns manage to wax lyrical here and there about lust, sins and at one point how rubbish the authority was as Father Renault did what he did.

“He is coming! He is here!”

Naturally, you have Hell raised demonic Nuns, where's the boss man? He makes an appearance to the last survivors in a chapel and he's a chilled out smooth talking chap. What does it all mean? Here's a quote from the film to sum it all up. “When a place is host to such profane acts, under the blasphemous guise of faith, even the house of God can become a gateway to Hell!” Pure Fulci right there!

Speaking of which, respect is due to a City of the Living Dead borrowed vomit scene and the music which feels like it belongs in a golden age long gone. The rooms and corridors are well used and claustrophobic, as the script tightens, the violence as the film goes on.

Flesh for the Inferno is a decent homage to the splatter fests a lot of us grew up with, however a majority of the cast aren't very good actors or actresses. This can be problematic when you're trying to feel a scene out, which is well staged, to be ruined by a trolling lapse of talent. It's a shame, and I don't usually point out such issues, but in this instance it spoils moments. Overall the movie is enjoyable, aside from a lazy final act which is padded and self-conscious of its rushed nature.

I do want to see other movies by this group. I can forgive its faults I suppose. The cast are having fun, you can see that. In fact most of them have a wide CV full of indie flicks to their names, a lot with Richard Griffin (he's been doing what he loves for well over a decade. This is the guy who pre-dated George Romero for hand-held camera zombies with Feeding the Masses). Plus if you're looking for the red stuff there's gallons of the stuff lobbed about. The special effects are inventive, and the scene with Becca's eye is a chilling showstopper.
