Severed Cinema News: The last Film of Jan Svankmajer is Almost Here!

Claimed to be the final film legendary animator/surrealist Jan Svankmajer will make, Insects, hopefully isn't far away. It's been planned for five years and for the first time in his long career, Jan reached out a crowd funding cap, saying it should be for the people and make them feel as if it is their film. He also stated the unfortunate truth that it is getting harder to gain money for such projects. I guess a world of Superhero movies are a wide gap away from Svankmajer's incredible creations. Raising a good few thousand on IndieGoGo, Jan, who's in his eighties now, will probably happily retire and grow tomatoes after this. The money wasn't near enough to complete everything, but it is said to be enough to make and film the vast animation processes. Meanwhile though, he's working alongside Jaromir Kallista, his friend and producer.

The plot is thus: A local pub in a small town. It’s Monday and the bar is closed, chairs are turned up on the tables. The pub is empty except for six amateur actors sitting in a corner. They've met to rehearse “The Insect Play” by the Čapek brothers. On a raised platform across the room we see a stage, set for Act II of the play. As the rehearsal progresses, the characters of the play are born and die with no regard to time. The actors slowly become one with them and some of them experience frightening transformations...

It's based on a genuine 1921 play by the Kapek brothers and is slated for a 2017 release. Being a long term fan of Jan Svankmajer, the Quay Brothers and Takena, I'm personally waiting in anticipation with itching sensations under my skin.

Here's a YouTube vid which delves a bit into it:
