The French Canadian Meat Butcher is back baby, and with a vengeance. As underground as you can get, Yan Kaos has painstakingly compiled, with utmost passion, this collection of international gore shorts for underground gore/horror buffs. Limited to 100 copies and signed by Kaos and his female counterpart, Nemesis Bathory, this will no doubt be a gore collectorís item you'll want to have in your possession. Responsible for possibly one of the sickest short films this reviewer has had the pleasure of viewing, titled Necromance: A Love Story, Kaos includes one of his other shorts on here and it holds up on par with the others.

In this collection we have some noticeable directors if youíre familiar, with the underground horror scene such as Marcus Koch (100 Tears, effects guru for American Guinea Pig), El Gore (Snuff Tape Trilogy, Isolation, Ghouls Night Out and Paraphilia), Brian Paulin (Bone Sickness, Fetus, Blood Pigs, Cryptic Plasm) and another Canadian, Eric Falardeau (Thanatomorphose).

First up, we have Who Watched Them Die? by Adrian Baez from the U.S. This one is decent, but pretty by the numbers. I loved the music and creepy voice over effects in the background. The look and feel of it was great but the delivery just didn't strike a nerve with me. The performances were a little too nonchalant and besides, the blood splatter and the gore was a bit reserved. What could have been a brutal senseless snuff kill film in the woods, didnít quite come though.

Up next is Push to the Limit, by Vin Price from Australia which plays as more of a black humor piece. The premise is simple: a weight lifter overexerts himself and what looks like sausages and fake blood explode from his rectum. I did appreciate the funny nod to juicers or meatheads working out at the gym. The soundtrack playing was funny as hell -- motivational 80's style cheese, gotta love it.

Elmers Justice is a Russian entry from Victor Murzikov, and is one of the better ones, because it has a longer running time and manages to unravel a story in that time with introducing some offbeat characters and delivering some wild special effects. Elmers Justice had a Taeter City (from Necrostorm Productions) feel to it. Very futuristic with a particularly fogged camera style. Hardcore gore buffs will no doubt shun the use of cgi gore in this one but it does have some good practical effects too, including chains being wrapped around a head and the head being ripped off -- a cool effect. I liked the style and look of this one -- it was quirky, inventive and creative.

Marcus Koch delivers a short from the U.S., very brief with some close-up flesh mutilation of a female corpse being desecrated. For a true testament of his work, check out The American Guinea Pig series (if youíre a gorehound and haven't heard of it, you shouldn't be here!)

Bloody Sunset is an offbeat and black humor filled short from Sweden by Robin Moller. It plays for humor, but the violence inflicted is sick and intense. A guy no longer wants to live so he hires a killer to do him in, in the way he chooses following a time line. The victim practically bosses around the poor sap carrying out the murder -- itís pretty fucked! He tells him how to kill him every step of the way, with detailed step by step instructions.

From Quebec, Canada, Eric Faladeau delivers a short titled Purgatory which looks like it was shot in the 70's; I love the authentic feel to it and the absolute dread and despair it evokes. A man appears to be trapped in a concrete room where he carries out self-mutilation, self-cannibalism and other acts, but it seems he cannot die and thus this is purgatory (I'm guessing). A cool little short from a fellow Canadian. Check out Faladeau's movie Thanatomorphose: a depressing and gore filled journey about a young girl who literally and slowly rots away. Very cool flick.

U.S. underground gore champion Brian Paulin has an excerpt from his hyper gore journey Cryptic Plasm on here and it packs all the splatter as you'd expect from Paulin's work. This particular scene is from an exorcism in Cryptic Plasm. I highly recommend picking up a copy of Cryptic Plasm, or any other of Paulin's films, if youíre into gore films. Itís fitting that Cryptic Plasm is on here as a short because the full movie was actually a bunch of shorts compiled with a wraparound story, so it works well on here.

The guru of this international gore film anthology, Yan Kaos, delivers his black and white version of Meat Butcher Baby, a crazy anarchist punk gore journey. With searing screams and hardcore music blistering in the background, our masked killer mutilates and kills a female victim in the bathtub -- itís one sick gore filled journey. Kaos dedicates himself to his craft, even putting together his own cool looking signature mask for the killer -- hopefully to return in Meat Butcher Baby 2. Kaos and his female partner Nemesis Bathory have also performed these cool interlude segments in between the gore shorts featured on here. They feature himself with sexy Bathory tied to a chair, as he tortures and kills her, all while introducing the groups of short films. This is great stuff from a Canadian underground gore freak playing by his own rules and making a name for himself.

Finally, last but not least on this gore film anthology, the goriest is El Gore's third entry (4th if you count part 0) in his Snuff Tapes Trilogy. This series is definitely one of the more twisted, polluting the underground right now and there is another collection of snuff tapes in the works. One of them, which is actually featured on part 2 of this gore film anthology, which I'll get to later. Snuff Tape 3: Red, Dead and Brown, features a sick scenario of a corpse being violated in a bathroom. Our killer goes through many depraved means of penetrating, mutilating and expelling bodily fluids on the hapless mound of meat that once was a human being. Itís all over-the-top and meant to shock, but not to be taken too seriously. The soundtrack features some cool goregrind by Anal Fistfuckers and more. Check out Grindhouse Family Filmworks Snuff Tape Trilogy.

Underground Gore Dealers Connection: Gore Shorts Film Anthology is a great compilation of gore shorts that Kaos has compiled here. There is much love put into this release and it should be supported! Contact Yan Kaos or Yan D.I.Y. now on Facebook and order some of his work. This anthology and now Volume 2 are available for purchase as well. This is a great release. Yan really put a lot of work into this, even doing a hand drawn cover. It doesn't get any more indie underground than this!!!
