Once You're In, There's No Way Out.

The Killing Room
opens with a message to the viewer: "In 1975 the Rockefeller Commission was appointed to investigate covert mind-control programs conducted by the CIA in the 1950s and 60s.  These programs were known as Project MK-ULTRA."  It continues with "By the time of the investigation, CIA Director Richard Helms had ordered all documents relating to the MK-ULTRA program destroyed."  Furthermore "Without these documents, it was impossible to verify whether the MK-ULTRA program had in fact been discontinued."

Next, we follow a group of five strangers congregating in an unknown location for some sort of experiment or testing.  The group sits in a room consisting of white walls and tile.  The tables and chairs are asymmetrically bolted to the floor.  They proceed to fill out forms for the events that are to unfold.  After a while
the events supervisor, Dr. Phillips (Peter Stormare, 8MM) enters and provides the group with some vague information about the forthcoming "experiment."  He asserts that they will all receive a payment of two hundred and fifty dollars at the end of the day and then corrals their consent forms and personal effects.  Monitoring the goings-on and recording the results is Emily Reilly (Chloe Sevigny, Gummo).  She does so from behind a viewing booth in another room.  The Killing Room then affirms its title when Dr. Phillips abruptly puts a bullet in one of the participant's unsuspecting face.  The group is as taken aback as the viewer, thus moulding the beginnings of a (possibly) great film.

After that shocking aforesaid sequence, this viewer should have turned the film off.  If I had done so, I would at least be able to sing some praises for the film.  Sadly it derails for the next 76-minutes into a contrived government terrorism orchestration conspiracy.  Ultimately The Killing Room begins with a bang and ends with a sputtering plop.

Vivendi Entertainment and Genius Products aborts The Killing Room onto Blu-Ray with a top-notch 2.35:1 1080p visual presentation.  The audio also boasts great English 5.1 DTS-HD Master Audio.  There are no supplements included.
