The packaging of “The Opening of Misty Beethoven” states that this is “widely considered the greatest adult film of all time.”  If this isn’t the greatest, it’s definitely up there amongst the greatest pieces of adult cinema ever created.  Adapted from the 1912 play, Pygmalion by George Bernard Shaw, and directed by Radley Metzger (as Henry Paris), the maestro of erotic stylish cinema, this 1970's adult classic makes its way to Blu-ray.  Thirty-six years after the film's inception, Distribpix deliver a much deserved and exceptional presentation of the film.  Let's take a look...

Sexpert, Dr. Seymour Love (Jamie Gillis, "Water Power") explores a seedy adult district of Paris.  He is adorned in a suit and coat much like a typical business man.  He enters an adult theatre.  Whilst seated, he is confronted by a woman offering him copulation.  They come to a price agreement, but our prostitute lets him know she’ll be ready in ten minutes.  After all, she has to facilitate an elderly theatre patron in a Napoleon costume, via hand job.

Later, Seymour and the woman return to a makeshift whorehouse apartment of sorts, where he haggles with her.  He also ventures into a room to observe a whore servicing a John, who turns out to be his friend, Geraldine Rich (Jacqueline Beudant).  When service is completed, Seymour and Geraldine attempt to intimidate and coax her for a job opportunity, then leave.  As the woman ponders, the viewer is witness to a woman going down on an anonymous penis -- to completion.  Her decision is made shortly after the oral recipient shoots a mini rope.  “Hey!  Hey!  Wait for me!” she hollers, as she chases after them.  She introduces herself as Misty Beethoven (Constance Money, " Maraschino Cherry") and they make their way onward.

Cut to the world’s single greatest airline, where passengers receive any sex act of their choosing from eager flight attendants.  Seymour, Geraldine and Misty are all onboard, traveling to Seymour's New York pad.  He has chosen Misty to become the next “Goldenrod Girl,” and sets out to transform her into the ultimate lover.  For the next few months she is groomed into character.  Together Dr. Love and Geraldine teach her the art of copulation with various dildos, how to take a cum-shot, as well as various sexual positions.  Seymour's ultimate goal is to have Misty Beethoven shine at the next party for bigwig publisher Lawrence Laymen (Ras Kean) (who additionally likes it in the bum as we will touch on later).

The Opening of Misty Beethoven” is a perfect piece of adult cinema.  It's beautifully shot, has a storyline, is well acted, has great music (one track in particular is almost identical to a track from "Suspiria") and erotic.  This isn't just a "YouPorn" style romp -- it's an actual plot-driven film one would watch in its entirety.  The beauty of this film is that none of the performers look like today's typical porn stars.  One can spot today's porn stars a mile away and any modern adult cinema lacks the style of such vintage classic cinema.  Also if you're into oral sex scenes then this is definitely for you.  There has to be a million blowjobs in the film.  Ok, that's an exaggeration -- in just about every scene, there is a main character being blown or getting blown in the background scenery.  Scenes in a sprawling Rome villa depict the maids blowing the butlers.  Every background character in any scene is receiving a blowjob it seems.

For dudes uncomfortable with their sexuality, there is a gem of a scene you might want to skip past.  Seymour throws a party where Misty is to finally meet Lawrence Laymen.  They meet and have a threesome with Laymen's wife.  All goes well until Misty puts on a strap-on and next thing we know she's giving it to Laymen whilst he buggers his wife.  The scene goes a tad too far, but I digress...

If you haven't already been persuaded to check out this film immediately, then I should reiterate that it stars Jamie Gillis and hottie, 20-year-old Constance Money!  “The Opening of Misty Beethoven” is an absolute classic.

Distribpix give “The Opening of Misty Beethoven” the royal treatment with a stellar Blu-ray presentation, that is packed with special features, card inserts, and even a 60-page booklet of liner notes.  The video is presented in its original aspect ratio of 1.85:1 with a 1080p MPEG-4 AVC HD transfer.  The film is soft at times but preserves the natural grain and simply looks amazing.  Just compare it to other releases of adult films from the 70’s.  This release is excellent.  The audio is presented with a lossless English DTS-HD 5.1 and Dolby Digital 2.0.  There are two versions of the film for this release, the hardcore explicit theatrical version (running 85 minutes) and the softcore cut version (running 81 minutes).  “The Opening of Misty Beethoven” is also available in a 2-disc DVD Collector's Edition.

There are a multitude of special features with this Blu-ray release.  Firstly, is the great 'Behind the Scenes of Misty Beethoven Documentary' (48:21 minutes), a documentary by 435 Productions which features interviews with porn star Gloria Leonard, Cinematographer Paul Glickman, Director of Music George Craig and others.  It is narrated by Benson Hurst and contains audio commentary by Director Radley Metzger.  Next up is 'Outtakes' which contains 24-minutes of Henry Paris outtakes.  There is a 3-minute slideshow.  'Ephemera' (06:41 minutes) contains press old newspaper articles.  There are 'Radio Spots' and 'Special Edition Credits' for this release.  Onward, is 'The Restoration of Misty' (25:58 minutes), which is an outstanding look into Distribpix's restoration of the original film elements for this Blu-ray release.  'Remembering Jamie Gillis' (09:00 minutes) is a tribute to the man by Benson Hurst.  'Desperately Seeking Susan: Constance Found' (07:41 minutes) is Benson Hurst's tribute to Constance Money, who disappeared from the adult industry early in her career.  'Jamie Gillis: The Final Interview' (18:53) is an interesting interview where Gillis speaks fondly of his career and his hatred for the film "Boogie Nights."  'Cinetta Studios Revisited' (03:08) shows the site of Layman's party 37-years later.  Finishing the extras are trailers for "The Private Afternoons of Pamela Mann," "Naked Came the Stranger," "Barbara Broadcast," "Maraschino Cherry," and a 60-page booklet of liner notes complete with photos.
