Screwballs is an infamous Canuxsploitation teenage sex comedy favorite to come out of the ‘80s.  It has spawned a ton of imitations and spin-off “balls” films which were a hot commodity at the time.  Until now, it has been unreleased and after an apparent legal battle, the fine folks at Severin Films have finally been able to release the film to its legion of fans.

Screwballs is quite possibly the most perverted film to come out of this infamous decade of sleazy goofball sex comedies.  The story surrounds the appropriately named T & A High.  A group of five male students each receive detention for various acts of adolescent perversion.  One young man is punished for catching a glimpse of upskirts of classroom hotties with mirrors as the girls venture down the school’s stairwell.  Another is caught masturbating in the cafeteria cooler.  Another pretends he’s the school doctor and delivers a breast exam.  All situations are over-the-top and goofy, which is the charm of the film, and the paramount tone that these raunchy ‘80s sex romps usually produce.  During detention (sorting Biology frogs) the group of heathens find themselves discussing the sexual prowess (or lack-thereof) of Purity Busch (Linda Speciale), the highly sought-after hottie who has garnered the reputation of being a bonafide virgin.  The quintet makes a bet with one another to see who can get, at the very least, a glimpse at her beloved breasts.  The rest of the film follows the oversexed journey of a bunch of horny guys trying to reach the Promised Land -- Purity Busch’s tits!

The endeavors to catch a glimpse of Busch in the buff occur with various degrees of desperation.  They go from showing up at her house with a bottle of wine for a date (which ends up with one of the guys getting with Purity’s mother when her father goes outside to see what’s causing all the commotion), to one of them being buried in the sand under the area she sunbathes daily.  All schemes seem to end in disarray, with an abundance of ridiculousness.

Screwballs tries to take the ‘80s teen sex comedy to a new level, and actually does.  In one sequence in particular we see the guys sitting in the library checking out nudie mags placed inside their text books.  Whilst enjoying the splender of the women in the magazines we see shots of their boners dancing around in their pants!  That doesn’t happen too often even by today’s standards.  In recent memory, not since the notorious pie-fucking scene in American Pie has anything come as close to something like that in a teen sex comedy.  Perhaps the shower scene in Porky’s, but that came a year prior.  There’s good ol’ fashioned strip-bowling thrown in for good measure.  A guy even gets his penis stuck in a bowling ball.  There’s even a scene of Purity Busch masturbating in her sleep with her big blue teddy bear.  Sleazy goofball goodness!

All of these types of comedies don’t take themselves seriously.  They are over-the-top, cartoony and as gratuitous as the MPAA will allow.  Screwballs is definitely no exception.  This film is riddled with cheese and outrageous situations that are exaggerated even further by crazy, cartoony sound effects (to a greater extent of what Lloyd Kaufman of Troma puts in his films.)  In some instances the movie is actually sped-up to compound the cartoonish nature of the film further.  ‘80s sex comedy veterans will no doubt enjoy these over-the-top antics, but newcomers might not be so kind.  Screwballs is a testament of the times, where sex, goofiness and fun blend nicely together as a fun film for men (and couples alike).

Fans of comedy films of this breed will no doubt eat this release up.  It’s been long overdue and now finally gets a legit release.  If you’re unfamiliar with these types of sex comedies from the ‘80s then this is a good place to start.  Screwballs makes for a great companion piece to Porky’s.  They are relatively different but share the same charm and spirit.  Not to mention, this film has the best ending of any ‘80s teen sex comedy -- period!

The raunchiest ‘80s sex comedy of all time, Screwballs, is brought to us from the fine folks at Severin Films.  This release is presented in a 1.66:1 widescreen aspect ratio and has never looked so good.  The audio is Dolby Digital 2.0 mono and is to be expected for a comedy release from this era.  The bonus features provide a bunch of treats.  There is an 11-minute interview with director Rafal Zielinski who mentions he’s both embarrassed and impressed with the outcome of the film.  There’s another with writers Linda Shayne and Jim Wynorski which runs 19-minutes in length.  Actor Kent Deuters has an 8-minute interview, along with a 7-minute interview with special FX artist Gerald Lukaniuk.  This latter interview might seem to be an odd inclusion, but Lukaniuk is rather entertaining and the interview is a welcomed inclusion.  The highlight of this disc is the 8-minute interview with Canuxploitation expert Paul Corupe who is incredibly knowledgeable about these ‘80s sex comedies.  The last interview on the disc is 9-minutes with Mr. Skin and a glistening with sweat McBeardo as they recount their love of ‘80s sex comedies.  This release also contains no less than 12 deleted scenes, a theatrical trailer and a commentary with director Rafal Zielinski.  Screwballs is also available on Blu-Ray from Severin Films.
