Why The Cabin in the Woods Still Holds Up Years Later
I was still young when I first watched The Cabin in the Woods, and it easily became one of my favorite movies. It’s not because it was the scariest or the most disgusting movie I’ve ever watched, but because it was different from what I’d seen before. It was equally hilarious and terrifying, and I know I might seem insane saying that, but it was. Even though it’s been many years since it was released, it still holds up surprisingly well. I recently watched it again and figured I’d write a quick review since I really loved this movie way back.
Over a decade later, The Cabin in the Woods hasn’t aged badly at all. It’s even more relevant now, especially when you think about how horror movies have evolved since it came out. I re-watched this movie on Netflix, so I’m pretty sure it’s also available on other streaming services.
Breaking Horror Rules in the Most Clever Way
The beginning of the movie was so basic. A group of five college friends, Dana, Jules, Curt, Holden, and Marty, go on a weekend trip to a remote cabin in the woods. It’s literally in the middle of nowhere where there’s no phone signal and just creepy vibes are everywhere… so we all know something bad’s going to happen. They party and go around the cabin. Unfortunately, they accidentally awaken something evil after reading an old diary they found. Then, one by one, things start going horribly wrong.
Monsters suddenly show up, and one by one, people start dying. So, of course, I immediately thought that this was just another slasher film you see on DISH TV deals and other streaming platforms. But boy, I was completely wrong.
It’s a horror movie that plays with all the usual rules and then breaks them on purpose. You know the typical characters in horror films: the final girl, the jock, the stoner, the smart guy, and the flirty one. This movie includes all of them, but instead of just following the usual pattern, it shows how those characters are being controlled and used for a bigger purpose or reason. It’s like the movie is saying, “We know how these stories usually go, but what if we changed the game?”
When it came out in 2012, it felt like a fresh take on horror. The main reason why it easily became one of my favorite movies. It was kind of making fun of the usual horror films, but it was also questioning why the rules are there in the first place. After this movie, more horror movies started to take risks and try new things like Get Out, It Follows, and more. These horror films scare you, but they also make you think deeper.
Watching Evil Dead Almost a Decade Later
Watching it again after all these years, I appreciated The Cabin in the Woods even more, even after watching the new horror movies that followed. Back then, I enjoyed the twist and the weirdness of the movie in its entirety. But now, I see how tightly it was written and how rare it is to find a horror movie that can balance absurd humor with actual dread so well.
I’ve watched so many horror movies through TV streaming over the years, and honestly, I still haven’t found anything quite like this one. Marty, the stoner who seemed like an up-to-no-good character, ended up being the most insightful character in the entire movie. The final act was also beautiful. The ending was also legendary. The entire movie really sticks with you.
The Horror Movie That Changed Everything in the 2010s
Looking back, The Cabin in the Woods is one of the most unique movies in its genre. It arrived at a time when many horror movies were stuck in remake mode or relying too much on jump scares and eerie settings. Instead of offering a new monster, it gave us a new lens. It challenged us to think about what horror is for and who it serves.
It doesn’t just hold up. It still matters. If you’ve never seen it, it’s worth watching just for the experience of having the rug pulled out from under you. And if, like me, you saw it years ago, it’s worth revisiting to see just how clever it really was, even up until now.
