Ail Maniax Anime Review from Pink Pineapple!

“I’ve seen it all, how bad can it be?” I thought to myself as I nonchalantly pressed the play button on the screen in front of me.  Little did I know, I would enter a world of perversion that I had never imagined. Being a fan of extreme horror films for most of my life and being part of the underground film community has desensitized me to just about anything you can throw my way as far as media is concerned. It has been a long time since I have been truly shocked by a film. I was beginning to think that it wasn’t going to happen again. That all changed upon viewing the three-episode hentai anime Ail Maniax.

To start off, Ail Maniax: Indecent Uniform Hunt & Witch Hunt Night (アイルMANIAX ~淫魔制服狩り&魔女狩りの夜に~) is a three-episode OVA (original video animation) from infamous Japanese animation studio Pink Pineapple. Airing from August of 2001 to March of 2002, the three-episode series has a simple premise. The series starts out following a demon that can grow either male or female genitalia (yes this is important, continue reading to see why) who’s sole goal is to sexually torture three women (a policewoman, young female student, and a young nurse) in increasingly obscene ways. The second half of the series takes a turn. We follow a group of women who have been accused of being witches and are subsequently punished by the “father” of a church. Much like the first half of the series, the second half involves “father” punishing the women in increasingly violent and obscene ways.

Ail Maniax is quite short at just under 90 minutes, and is never boring, as there is always something happening. However, there lies the biggest issue with the series. No matter how simple the premise is, the story still comes off as extremely disjointed and awkward. Characters are seemingly introduced at random, and events just sort of “happen” throughout. There also seems to be a plot point about a woman being impregnated with a God? Part of this could be attributed to the series receiving a poor translation from the original Japanese dialogue, as it appears that the series only received a fan translation — and a poor one at that. However, there are obvious plot holes throughout that can’t be attributed to this. There is simply too much that goes on during the short run time. Still, the story isn’t why you’re here and why you’ll keep watching.

Similar to Pink Pineapple’s other notable title Bondage Game, Ail Maniax is a series that breaks every boundary of good taste. It leaves no taboo unbroken. The series includes scenes of scat, watersports, genital mutilation, nipple fisting (yes, you read that right), spiked dildos, futanari, and a scene of a demon ripping a woman’s uterus out of her navel.  The series revels in its own filth, with the scenes focusing on the extreme acts for an uncomfortably long time. As a scholar of extreme Japanese fetish films, I thought I’d seen it all but there are acts in this that I can’t think of a name for. A prime example is a scene with a demon growing a penis and masturbating itself by digging into a woman’s stomach as it is inside her. Needless to say, this one isn’t for the squeamish or easily offended.

But enough about the nasty stuff What about the quality of the film itself? The animation is very well done, especially considering this is hentai OVA from the early 2000s.  The soundtrack is also well done, with tracks that are catchy enough that you’ll be whistling them long after the film ends and get a reminder of the filth you experienced. 

Ail Maniax is unlike anything else I’ve ever seen, and not just in the world of anime but of media in general. While the story itself is messy and confusing, the nastiness presented in the series is memorable (for better or worse). It is not something I’ll soon forget. The catchy music, well done animation, and extreme fetish content make for a unique viewing experience that is sure to please fans of extreme hentai.
