Blood Sacrifice: The Horned Goddess

Once again, I’m drawn to Quebec as they prove to have one of the most amazing metal scenes in Canada. I’ve been exploring several different bands, some more well known and some like Blood Sacrifice not so much but despite this I believe I’ve found a gem here with The Horned Goddess.

We are talking a total war metal assault on your senses. Canada is no stranger to this style of relentless, dirty, and grimy metal heralding such acts as Blasphemy, Conqueror, Axis of Advance, Revenge, and more. Blood Sacrifice deliver this dirty precise attack with tremendous force, unrelenting down your throat brutality.

The musicianship is precise and swift devastating and annihilating everything in its path. Grinding riffs with traditional black metal melodies, nonstop hypercan blast beats and those vocals are the icing on the cake.

Those vocals belonging to Bloodøks, the female front and lead vocalist regurgitating some of the evillest sounding filth. Chris Severed (editor/creator/owner) of Severed Cinema had a listen and remarked “that’s a woman?” Blodøks has some of the most evil vox that would make Count Grishnackh himself blush. Some of the most powerful and sinister sounding black metal vocals from a woman or man, her style is impressive and drips with deep evil satisfaction. I also believe she does art and is a tattoo artist.

The Horned Goddess demo tape features 5 tracks of relentless punishing bestial war metal. Noteworthy is Illusory of Spectral Wound (review of A Diabolic Thirst here)/Profane Order handles the drum beatdowns plus Patrick McDowall from Spectral Wound produced this release. “Mean” Jean and Aaron grind out the riffs while Pat handles the low end. I was fortunate enough to snag one of their last long sleeve shirts and a pin from the band which I was psyched about. It is a damn shame the band are no longer around, but you never know what the future will bring.

The Horned Goddess is a savage release, just so well done, such powerful sound, tight musicianship and aggression all around. I highly recommend giving it a listen if war metal/grinding black metal is your cup of tea.
