Bloody Mayhem Unleashed! A Review of ‘2001 Maniacs: The Curse of the Confederacy’ Comic!
2001 Maniacs film director Tim Sullivan returns to wreck more confederacy carnage with this one-shot prequel comic to the movie of the same name which was released in 2005. In ‘Curse of the Confederacy‘ we are introduced to Mayor George Buckham (in a reference to George W. Bush) played gleefully by Freddy Kruegar himself, Robert Englund.
It’s 1864 in the Southern USA. The community of Pleasant Valley Georgia has up to this point has remained untouched by the civil war raging between North and South. One day one of Mayor Buckham’s daughters, Scarlett, is brutally killed by a bunch of Yankee soldiers led by Bernard Posner, son of General Buford Posner of the North army. Eventually the same soldiers invade the town. Led by General Posner, they slaughter all the inhabitants including Buckham and burn it to the ground.
The Pleasant Valley townsfolk don’t stay dead for long. A slave Buckham be-friended (remember it’s 1864 and slaves were common) earlier named Crow puts a curse on the Yankee soldiers who are responsible for the massacre. Soon Mayor Buckham is alive and kicking, donning a confederate flag patch over his gouged-out eye. He quickly dispatches General Posner and thus Pleasant Valley lies dormant until more invaders choose to threaten the community and ideals.
I picked up this comic in a local shop called Timemasters in their bargain bin for a buck fifty and it was a great find. Let’s just say I will be going back to look for more similar books in their bins. The book has high quality art by legendary Raulo Caceres (Elizabeth Bathory, Justine y Juliette) who needs no introduction. Caceres has multiple art books and projects under his belt. He is known for his decadent sexual and violent artwork. Caceres focuses on graphic violence and multitudes of nudity (there are wild breasts flailing around in about 60% of the book). The art is vivid, textured, and elaborate in every aspect. It is high quality all around.
Tim Sullivan, director of the 2001 Maniacs film (which I recommend for good, funny gory fun) delivers a great story with some absolutely funny and colorful dialogue, especially from Mayor Buckham.
Avatar Press deliver the goods with The Curse of the Confederacy. They are responsible for numerous explicit comics including my personal favorite Crossed. The great thing with this comic is you don’t need to buy a bunch to start or pick up a storyline. It stands on its own as a special or commonly known as one-shot. Avatar have also released a couple more stand alone 2001 Maniacs books which are currently available. If you’re into high quality gore and nudity-filled comics, it’s a no brainer to pick this up.
