Deviant Pseudo-Snuff Short Film Review!
Our Deviant journey begins with the humming of television static. We cut to a point-of-view shot of someone walking up some concrete steps. He enters a seemingly normal house. A black kitty is watching from a couch. A woman can he heard whimpering in the distance. Turning a corner and heading down a set of basement stairs, we see the whimpering woman now, bent over a washer and dryer. She is being raped by a shirtless fellow in a pig mask. Our POV character laughs, “I’ll give you a minute.” he states, returning up the stairs.
Once upstairs our guy showcases some arcade machines and ventures to the sink for some H2O. The whole while we can still hear our victim crying and pleading. This whole situation is rather disturbing and amplified by our POV character’s casual attitude. We cut to television static.
Next our character sits on a couch, no longer shown in first person. Our rapist joins him on the couch and the two have a casual conversation about electrical and lumber prices skyrocketing in the construction industry. The whole conversation is peppered with our victim still crying and pleading. We cut to television static.
The two of them head back down into the basement. The girl is duct taped to a chair with a bag over her head. “So, you’ve had her for what, two days you said?” asks the house guest. The captor gives her a light face smack, “A couple days yeah.” “You been feedin’ her?” enquires the house guest. “No, not yet.”
The house guest seemingly shows a little compassion. The captor removes the bag from over our victim’s head. “Are you thirsty?” She franticly nods her head still whimpering. The guest then throws a cup of water over her. So, nope, this viewer was incorrect. Axe the compassion. Next thing we know the house guest grabs a knife and sticks the victim in the gut. She continues to cry from behind a duct taped mouth as he reaches inside revealing an intestine. He continues to disembowel her, whilst his rapist comrade holds his hand over her mouth. “How much is in there?” asked the rapist. “Almost done baby.” states the organ puller, matter-of-factly. He removes some intestines, tells her to “Shut the fuck up.” Then returns the bag over her head, but the torment does not end here…
Wow, Deviant is a nasty little short film from newcomer director, writer, and star, Brandon Terry, curator of the MorbidHorror Podcast on Spotify (coming soon to Severed Cinema). From the onset we have an uneasy atmosphere compounded by the nonchalant nature of our characters and their actions. The second sequence in which the two villains conduct a conversation on the couch whilst the viewer can hear the sobbing of the freshly defiled victim still in the basement is totally unnerving and sets the tone for the rest of this (mis)adventure.
Deviant is a solid-as-fuck undertaking into the pseudo-snuff genre that was cemented by the likes of the now (unfortunately) disbanded ToeTag Pictures and the August Underground series. The film’s opening sequence shows a total homage to how August Underground started. Sure, some of the FX shots are crudely done, but for the most part the effects are first-rate, and are sure to satiate depraved appetites. The use of regular situations, including skate park footage, also lends to the authenticity of a pseudo-snuff expedition such as this.
Stay tuned to Severed Cinema for a release date for Deviant accompanied by two other shorts titled From the Womb into the Trash and Garage Gore-Shed. Additionally, be sure to look out for a cameo from Very Fine Crap Video’s own James Bell, who also contributed some props to the grisly affair.
