Gorerotted: Mutilated in Minutes Album Review!
Gorerotted Music Review:
If you’re an addict for the ol’ horror influenced fast paced metal with vocals sounding like growls, burps, and stomach pains, and you haven’t at least chanced upon the legendary UK nasties, Gorerotted at least once or twice, then shame upon your dark soul. They were active from the ‘90s and finally were laid to rest (though under another name) in 2014.
The scene had a multitude of growlers with fast frantic chugging blasts around the time, yet not many could boast two very distinct vocalists. Nor could many be proud of the fact that most of the lyrics can be deciphered, unlike a lot of pig noises and cricket chirps which we apparently must pretend are words these days. Fuck that! I think one clear variation to show quality in artists and bands should be actual written audible words, whether they be simply random tales of torture, decay, murder, whatever, it shows some care. Not a gang of fed-up students making stupid grunts while sticking their guitars into their amps or speakers to produce feedback whilst a drum machine plays.
Gorerotted happened to be one of my first ever adventures into these evil realms of deathgrind, goregrind, grindcore, death metal, call it what you will. Around the year 2000, maybe ’01, I found their demo CD in a gloomy record shop at the top of the road (have I mentioned this crusty, dusty, dark place before? The proprietor had a bottle of pills under the counter, “…in case things get too much.” and once watched the owner of the restaurant next door out back of the building masturbating a dog). Her Gash I Did Slash, tipped the 13-minute mark in total. The cover was a right haphazard affair which showed a black laced sense of humour and the will to offend as the listener found reason to chuckle. Another thing I liked was the band’s link to my home city of Hull.
Mutilated in Minutes is their masterpiece, a loud aggressive throb of psychopathic energy hitting you. Both vocalists are the right balance. One is low and growly. The other screams like a banshee. There are a few neat horror movie samples along the path for our enjoyment, nicely placed, not over saturated like, say, Mortician. For the year 2000, this was an awesome slice of brutality. I’ve taken to using it in the gym recently, along with Anaal Nathrakh, Necroskinner stuff and later Mayhem albums, to give me the blast of raw energy I need.
Track one, Hack Sore, kicks off with Andrea Bianchi’s Burial Ground as a sample, “My God! They’re using tools!” Then to extreme noise, we have lyrics such as “Blades pliers industrial snips, using knives to cut out bits!” Both Mr. Gore and Goreskin (the growling one) trade lines constantly throughout the album. The guitars change up enough to keep the flow interesting. Track two, Bed ’em Behead ’em, opens with a nice grinding guitar before a more rolling hard guttural onslaught throws you off your seat. By the time you’re at Stab Me Til I cum (a rougher version featured on the before mentioned demo CD) you realize that there’s musically a lot going on. The tempo transforms frequently, as does the drum patterns.
Corpse Fuckin’ Art has nothing to do with Jörg Buttgereit other than the title, but has juicy lines like “… emaciated stiff, nauseating tepid whiff, putrefaction dank in smells, intoxicating infestation…” This is Cannibal Corpse and Exhumed on amphetamines! By the moment, Put Your Bits in a Concrete Mix explodes forth, your head will be nodding violently. Gorerotted are rather catchy.
The ingredient which makes Gorerotted stand out is absolutely the humour involved. They are talented but aren’t serious. They’re dedicated to wrecking your ear drums, but as for the words, it’s all tongue in cheek. Mutilated in Minutes Pure old school goregrind the way it should always be.
