Homicidal Harry Review from HardGore Core Productions!
The HardGore Core Crew are back with Homicidal Harry, to deliver an unhealthy over-the-top dose of humor and splatter. I’ve been a member of the Facebook group myself since it’s inception by probably the biggest lover of gory movies I’ve ever met in my life, Nathan Hine aka Harry Collins. Look up the definition of gore in the dictionary or Google and Collins is probably there somewhere. The guy is a long-time fan and supporter of gory filmmakers worldwide. It’s his endless passion.
Collins gathered up a group of like-minded friends and started delving into the filmmaking side of things years back. Short films such as The Last Days of Livermore (see review here), Keepsake (see review here), Family Home Evening (see review here), and a full length feature titled The Sideling Hill (see review here), not including the collabs and cameos in various projects.
Homicidal Harry is a project directed by Collins’ friend Bob Vresilovic, who also appeared in most of the previous projects. This one is a throwback to those cheesy eighties over-the-top slashers such as Home Sweet Home. Along for the ride are a lot of the usual suspects who have worked on all previous projects such as Darren Ricci, Ashley Crewl, Matty Calhoun, and even indie gore filmmaker Jim Roberts (And Then My Mind Walked Away, Closing Time).
Harry (Nathan Hine) sits rotting in a mental institution with his degenerate roommate (Jim Roberts) who masturbates constantly. The voices in Harry’s head tells him to kill but he subdues them long enough with medication to get out of the institution on good behavior. Once out, Harry makes his way to a dilapidated house known as the old Brinker house where he kills anyone and everyone that crosses his path. Prostitutes, junkies, etcetera; they all fall prey to the wraith of Homicidal Harry.
Homicidal Harry has lots of gore as expected from the HardGore Core team. Blood drenches the screen. There is decapitation, gory stabbings, head squishing, and more. It’s a total bloodbath on a budget but it doesn’t take itself too seriously. I got a kick out of Harry wearing the signature ski masks during the killings. If you know Harry at all, you know his signature ski masks are a big part of his schtick when reviewing films or talking about horror in general with HardGore Core.
In between scenes there are a lot of titles that pop-up and some come and go a little too quickly. They basically set up a scene. The voice in Harry’s head is a red masked figure who is Harry’s subconscious telling him to kill. These scenes were a cool route to take with the film. The viewer sees and hears the evil masked figure inside his head. There are plenty of loud jump scare scenes where the audio is loud, so it scares the shit out of you. I’m not sure if this was intentional or not but it worked. Nathan Hine does a good job in the role because he is Harry in the first place. It was obviously based around his ski masked persona if he was a raging psychotic killer.
Homicidal Harry is a cool gory old-school horror throwback which delivers plenty of saucy gore which doesn’t think its shit don’t stink.
