Scarlet Piss Princess Review from Ensuring Your Body to Hell Productions!
Jack Mulvanerty, newcomer director in the horror fetish realm has been no stranger to Severed Cinema this past year of our lord. First with our review of Doll Fluids (read review here), then with Split (read review here), two films directed by Mulvanerty and Daniel Valient (White Gardenia). With Scarlet Piss Princess Jack Mulvanerty and actress Emily E. set out to complete an experimental fetish arthouse film in two days. And that they did.
Okay, let’s get one thing straight regarding this being shot in two days. Initially, I thought this may potentially be just a slapped-together affair, shot in a meagre two days. And would announcing that brief shooting timeframe, would people feel the same? Rest assured my hasty internal allegations were immediately thwarted upon my first viewing of Scarlet Piss Princess. Boy was I inaccurate. Conversely, this two-day filming schedule solidifies that Mulvanerty is a passionate director who was able to pull off an exquisite corpse of a film in record time.
So essentially Scarlet Piss Princess doesn’t follow a sequential structure – it is non-linier overlayed with experimental noise music and other auditory distortions. The premise for the film according to the director himself follows Emily E’s character a camgirl who feel betrayed by life and is helplessly alone. To combat said loneliness she engages in a multitude of solemn self-harm as well as with a male counterpart (Mulvanerty). What follows is sixty-four-minutes of lascivious activities she mainly performs on herself, but for good measure, Mulvanerty show sup to squeeze her throat from time to time as well as imbibe in fellatio.
Shot predominantly handheld, in both colour and black and white,Scarlet Piss Princess is visually stunning. The movie is a meld of scenery of Emily’s character walking through a cemetery juxtaposed with scenes in a small room. She is either in a bathtub, dressed in a couple black latex outfits, or urinating in a bowl.
Visually the film is both physically and mentally voyeuristic in its execution. We see the tortured soul of Emily raw, vulnerable, and often explicitly completely nude. At times she lays in a bathtub, ‘piss princess’ written on her stomach, which blends with her many tattoos. Other times she can be seen choking herself, glaring at her nude body in the mirror which forces her to vomit in the toilet. She smacks herself. She cuts herself. She chokes herself. Stabs her breasts with intimidating needles. Then in other sequences, as aforementioned, she saunters through a graveyard. One standout scene shows her overlooking a freshly dug grave, but also a blank headstone as if she ponders her upcoming impending demise. Is that headstone for her, does she think?
There is some repetitious imagery throughout Scarlet Piss Princess which represents all the worldly shit circling in her head. The repetition perfectly showcases emphasis. The repetition herein compounds her self-loathing to the viewers. Repetition is used expertly by Harmony Korine in such films as Trash Humpers and Spring Breakers, mind you on a different level.
Scarlet Piss Princess is an expertly perverse experimental piece of art. The abundance of vulnerable scenes of Emily E. in her birthday suit whilst situationally dark, she is very much still alluring to watch as a viewer. The combination of attractiveness and iniquitous situations will be a challenging combo for the viewer. Is the film titillating still, or does the grim subject matter trump any semblance of seduction? Not since I Cut Your Flesh have I pondered this.
