The Secret of the Devils Mushrooms from P.S.Y.C.H.O. Productions!
The Fungal Frenzy Unveiled: A Hilariously Gory Journey in ‘The Secret of the Devils Mushrooms
It is always a fun time when P.S.Y.C.H.O. Productions have new material to watch and review. Crippler Cris, Master W., Jim Aal and Sebastian Zeglarski are up to more gory and humorous shenanigans. They have unleashed a new short titled The Secret of the Devils Mushrooms (Das Geheimnis der Teufelspilze). Not to be confused by their release of The Secret of the Magic Mushrooms in 2009 which was actually P.S.Y.C.H.O Productions first full-length feature.
The Secret of the Devils Mushrooms is featured in an upcoming premiere in Germany alongside Sebastian Zeglarski’s Violent Obsession (see article here) and his short film Lilli Got Sick (read review here). The P.S.Y.C.H.O Productions team were cool enough to send out a screener to Severed Cinema for our viewing displeasure. Personally, I’ve loved following and reviewing their past celluloid crimes such as Cannibal Messiah and Nocta. Two films which embody the true sense of horror epics you would have watched at The Grand Guignol Theater in Paris in 1897 if such a venue existed today.
The Secret of the Devils Mushrooms is a film I would invite fellow degenerate friends over to watch, partake in some devil’s lettuce and a couple of Weihenstephaner’s. It is a party film, a fun watch, and a good time even if you’re not under the influence and still have an unnatural wit about you. The English subtitles/dialogue is absolutely positively amazing and will hit your funny bone in that way where it’s not actually funny but very painful and you can’t figure out to this day why it’s called that but you are still half laughing/crying.
We are introduced to Master W and Jim Aal who are partaking in the consumption of magic mushrooms. After Master W. remarks they should only eat one gram each they both gorge themselves on the mysterious looking fungi. It is said to have been harvested from the graves of menstruating women they possess unwieldy power. Jim Aal at one point asks Master W. if he looks okay, not realizing his eyeballs have become blown up the size of balloons. Much off camera gory hilarity ensues as they wake up in their flat covered in blood, not knowing how, why, or what happened.
They discover a video camera and begin to check out the footage captured on it. To their surprise they quickly discover how they got the blood on them. They watch in disbelief, shock, and amusement as Jim tries to put the moves on a woman and feels the sting of rejection. The woman is seen walking through the woods only to be brutally bludgeoned in the head by a wide-eyed Jim, hellbent on revenge for turning him down. The woman’s screams are relentless as is the blood projectile spraying like a geyser from her head. Jim doesn’t stop there either; he stabs her and chainsaws her body all the while Master W. is filming.
The Secret of the Devils Mushrooms is all done in a comedic tongue in cheek fashion even if the gore is graphic and gruesome. In one scene Jim takes a long walk to get a cord to power his chainsaw to use on his victim but realizes it’s a battery pack operated saw. There are lots of little humorous bits accompanied with the dialogue make it a bunch of fun to watch.
The Secret of the Devils Mushrooms is self-aware and pokes fun at a bunch of events that occur. It questions its own characters and why they are doing goofy shit. It doesn’t take itself too seriously but its witty enough to poke fun at itself. The Secret of the Devils Mushrooms is the only definitive film you need to see about hallucinogenic substances this year. P.S.Y.C.H.O Productions pull off another entertaining romp destined to make gore fans smile from ear to ear, a beautiful blend of trippy humour and bloodshed.
