Trans* Review from TR Productions!
Esa Jussila returns to deliver more twisted short film horror/gore madness with Trans*. Putting Finland on the map for well made, ultra-gory and professionally shot material, Trans* is no exception. Its 20 minute run time weaves a tale of experimental body horror which goes awry. Trans* has a darker, no-nonsense approach, compared to Jussila’s previous splatter comedy shorts Goremageddon 1 and 2 (see reviews here). I couldn’t get enough of the two well-made splatter-fests, which delivered the gore in buckets, as well as the laughs.
Trans* follows the story of a junkie who agrees to use his body for a deadly experiment because the price is right. We soon see the effects of what the experiment has on the poor fucker as he is swimming face down in a pool of opaque chunky vomit, accented by what may be frozen peas and carrots. The guy can’t take the pain anymore so he gets one of the goons who got him into the mess in the first place to bring him to an underground doctor. A bunch of severely fucked up shit happens and the blood rains in buckets.
Trans*, from the credits to the effects are done extremely well. The material is not original but it’s quirky enough to hold the viewers interest. The “creation” we see at the climax almost reminds me of something from one of Frank Henenlotter’s films. I’m not going to ruin it, so you can see for yourself. It was hard to top Goremageddon 1 and 2, so this sophomore outing doesn’t quite hit the same mark in terms of entertainment value but no director wants to be a one trick pony, so going in different directions is a must.
I know Jussisla and crew are working on another upcoming film called Homecoming and it looks like it’s going to be a wild ride of extreme top-notch gore and carnage. The climax in Trans* is a cool blood soaked ride, until it’s revealed what has been playing pinball with the insides of our main character. Many thanks to Esa Jussila for sending Trans* and the Goremageddon short films for me to check out. If you’re into well done gore, then you should definitely contact him on Facebook or check out TR Productions.
