Transylvania Tapes: Brad Sykes’ Eurohorror Comeback Unveiled in Haunting New Trailer
Around the middle of last year, I wrote an article about the return of underground filmmaking legend, Brad Sykes (see article Severed Roots: Brad Sykes Unleashes Transylvania Tapes) and his long planned comeback baby, Transylvania Tapes. There wasn’t much available at the time to show, but now there’s a Euro Jean Rollin style trailer out and about.
The trailer doesn’t reveal much but makes the viewer yearn for answers to what is going to happen in the movie. Heavily using wonderful locations, looking like a newly discovered gem from years ago, Transylvania Tapes filmed entirely on location in Romania, is a unique mix of found footage and Eurohorror. Brad Sykes also directed Camp Blood, Goth, and many more, plus was my first ever Severed Cinema interview (see interview Horror in Hi-8: An Interview with Brad Sykes). The film stars newcomer Valeria Badiuc and iconic Romanian actors Ion Haiduc (Subspecies 2-4, Trancers 4, and 5) and Gabriel Spahiu (High Tension).
Transylvania Tapes follows Mara Enescu, a young woman in her 30s who travels from Los Angeles to her home country of Romania to discover the truth about her mother’s disappearance in Transylvania years ago. Together with a cameraman friend, Mara journeys from Bucharest to the birthplace of Dracula himself.
It’ll have its world premiere at the Horror-on-Sea Film Festival on June 6 in the UK. The film will also have its Pittsburgh premiere at GrossFest (July 31-Aug.1) and an Oklahoma premiere at the Red Fern Reaper Film Festival on Oct. 17, with more announcements to follow on various social media pages.
