The Swabian Sawmill Massacre Review from Dead Vision Releasing!
Director Madman Marv clearly indicates this low budget German movie is an exercise in putrid amateur gore. Clocking in at 22-minutes The Swabian Sawmill Massacre (Das Schwabische Sagewerkmassaker) delivers just what it promises. We get just over a half dozen low budget practical gore effects kills. A psycho dressed in my grandfathers checkered hunting shirt, wearing a white condom-esque mask stalks the workers of the sawmill that happens to be by the woods he is inhabiting. After the killer dispatches his first victim he has a choice of masks found in the victims backpack and decides not to use the leatherface mask for obvious reasons!
The Swabian Sawmill Massacre is a cool-as-balls low budget German gore short. It doesn’t take itself seriously and from what the director Madman Marv told me, the whole crew had a blast making it The Swabian Sawmill Massacre was considered a labor of love by gore hounds for gore hounds. Filmed near Ulm in South Germany at Madman Marv’s fathers sawmill, where he told me he also occasionally works himself cutting up and dismembering the carcasses of hapless victim that wander the countryside and enter into his clutches.
The film features English subtitles and I personally think the subs are what make the movie downright hilarious. I’m not sure if it’s translating what they are saying exactly but if it is, fuck me! The conversation between the sawmill manager Olaf and his dumb ass friend are some funny shit right there. In Olaf’s office there is a framed picture of Lucio Fulci which states his birth and death but not as a director of film but as director of the sawmill! In the intro Olaf also rummages through a drawer in his desk and pulls out a copy of Jochen Stephens underground gore classic Blutnacht. Clearly from these two scenes we get a good idea of what territory this movie is entering.
The gore is definitely amateurish as we see all the plastic limbs, squirting squibs, interchanging of fake mannequins for the actors as they are murdered, but it’s cool and I dig it. I love the feel of Swabian Sawmill Massacre — it has some cool scenes. I love the intro when the killer is walking by the hay bales with the white sheets blowing around him. The location is perfect for a splatter film, using a real life sawmill really adds this great ambiance to it which transcends it above other gore/slasher movies.
The killer looks hilarious, checkered shirt, condom mask, and fanny pack wearin’ ass! Some of the crew in this were responsible for such German splatter classics such as Der Henker and Big Foot. I can honestly say the most disturbing part in the movie is when one of the male cast actually hauls out his dick and starts to pretend masturbating. It truly is horrific and traumatizing. If you’re into low budget German splatter then you know what you’re getting into with this one. I recommend it — it knows how to poke fun at itself and it’s an entertaining 22-minutes. All hail the gore and madness that Madman Marv has created with The Swabian Sawmill Massacre! Pick up a copy from Dead Vision Releasing (here).
