VHS Dreams to Blu-ray Screams: A Chinese Ghost Story Trilogy Rises Again!

Way back, many many years ago in the UK, a season of Hong Kong flicks were shown on TV for a whole week late night. Among them was Mr. Vampire, Encounters of the Spooky Kind, Esprit D’ Amour (see ‘Esprit D’Amour’ – The Sweetest Haunting You’ve Never Seen), and A Chinese Ghost Story (倩女幽魂). Cult film fans exploded everywhere, we couldn’t get enough! Back then, we had to get copied tapes sometimes without subtitles or dubs or buy something expensive off companies like Eastern Heroes (when they appeared). Nowadays it’s easier however sometimes it isn’t.

A Chinese Ghost Story had two sequels, the first two movies are easy to obtain dubbed or subbed, whilst the third is a lil bit trickier. No dubbed ones that I know of exist, and the quality is hit and miss at best.

Stepping into the circle is Shout Factory/ Scream Factory announcing proudly their upcoming October releases. One of these happens to be all three in a juicy boxset with a limited-edition poster!!!!!!

Tsu Hark’s legendary FX filled dreamy tales can now fly into many homes presented nicely together. Starring the one-of-a-kind, Joey Wang, with the late and terribly missed, Leslie Cheung as the lead in the first two, these films are truly epic.
