Blood-Drenched Beats: Exploring the Album ‘The Resickened Orgy’ from Lord Gore!
Lord Gore Review:
Amongst the bowels and growls of Death Metal, Grindcore, and Goregrind, there stands a few mammoth bands who brilliantly merge extreme noise with horror samples and lyrics. Most people think of Necrophagia (Killjoy, the legend), Mortician, and Impetigo to name but three. However, one name generally gets overlooked. He’s a guy who is so twisted and obsessed with horror that he jumps from band to band inflicting nasty pounding metal tunes into listeners whilst clustering festered movie samples all over the place. His name is Neil Smith, but he should be forever known as Maniac Neil.
Since the early 2000s, this mutant monster has been involved with mob after mob of crimson obsessed lunatics who exist solely to birth good music and educate the masses about horror movies. A while ago I reviewed the debut album by one of his earliest creations, Frightmare (see my review of the album ‘Midnight Murder Mania’ from Frightmare here) in which I named him an unsung hero. I stick with that statement! He’s a fanboy, along with the late great Killjoy, he’s the Chas Balun of metal. Look since discovering Gorerotted (see my review of ‘Mutilated in Minutes’ from Gorerotted here) back in 2000/01 picking up an old CD EP from a dusty second hand record store (more of that via the Gorerotted review) metal plus horror was a glorious merger in my brain once and for all.
Lord Gore, like his other former project, Bloodfreak, grinds and throbs along but uses stabs and slashes of guitar adrenaline from time to time to really make your ears prick up. In fact, Neil, and vocalist, Gurge equally powered up the tunes with horror elements lovingly (Neil left in 2006 then rejoined then left again in 2019).
Beginning disc one of the album The Resickened Orgy (Horror Pain Gore Death Productions have popped this out as a double) we have the classic ‘80s horror film for all metalhead teens of that era (called “Grebs” in the UK), Trick or Treat. Ozzy Osbourne laments the lyrics to a song as his cameo preacher character, then it’s an into to ‘Morgue Whore.’ The guitar work starts almost doom sludge style like Electric Wizard before we receive a bellowing gurgly throat rip from Gurge. The song slowly builds giving you time to nod your head before the 1-minute-40-second mark when the atmosphere is laid on thick. Then shit speeds up. Welcome to their 2002 beast, ‘The Autophagous Orgy!’
‘Krash Course in Psychopathology’ beautifully samples Lucio Fulci’s The New York Ripper. Unlike Mortician, the film bites don’t last forever — they are usually ten to twenty seconds, not outstaying their welcome. One again we get fast-paced, slavering, and full of snarls and growls, but lyrics are understandable for most of the time: “…hopeless necromantic, slit it open stick it in, for what I lack in skill, I make up with gore rot an’ swill…” Pure lush bleak poetry. There’s a great screaming ‘80s guitar in this one.
As we continue onwards along this road filled with dismembered body parts, lyrically brutal tales (“You betrayed my trust you fuckin’ whore…”) are accompanied by severe blasting noise and fast drums. Brutal and unforgiving. The band are extreme, truly messed up like Frightmare. The early 2000s was a wonderful era for underground metal.
Then disc two is ‘Resickened’ from 2004. It’s lower quality audio for some reason, but identical in bloody violence to its prior disc.
Horror samples range from Deadbeat at Dawn, Return of the Living Dead, Shivers, and My Sweet Satan — honestly, its too many to list here. The song titles are fantastic: ‘Zombie Molestation,’ ‘Brain Fucker,’ ‘Kicked to Death,’ Trioxin,’ ‘Human Bot-Fly,’ to name a few. There are twenty-five tunes including intros. This compilation re-release is a must have from Horror Pain Gore Death Productions. Their catalogue of impure sicknesses is astronomical. For instance, they have The Crippler, one of my favourite modern fucking nutjob bands, whose album I reviewed (see my review of the album I’m Just Going to Let Myself In from The Crippler here).
Maniac Neil is currently killing the guitar with Dripping Decay. Check out their Instagram Page here.
For fanatics of loud chugging metal slammed disgustingly into the horror genre, Lord Gore is seriously worth hunting and capturing, no matter what.
